Girls Rock NC! 2008

The Girls Rock Camp is a project of the nonprofit Girls Rock North Carolina. Their Mission is to empower girls in North Carolina to be confident members of their creative communities by strengthening their skills in arts, music, and teamwork.

The compilation is 307 Knox's way of helping the camp. It's a compilation of some of the most rocking women in North Carolina. All proceeds from the sale go to Girls Rock Camp.

* Elizabeth Cotten was born in Chapel Hill, NC in 1895.  She began writing music as a child and wrote "Freight Train" when she was nearly 12.  In this speech she describes how she taught herself to play guitar after unsuccessful attempts at playing her brother's banjo.  She was left-handed and developed the unique style of playing the guitar upside down and 'backwards', i.e. the low E string is on the bottom of the neck instead of the top.  This style ultimately became known as "Cotten Picking".

Cotten was employed as a housekeeper by the Seeger family (relatives of well-known folk singer, Pete Seeger).  It wasn't until the 1950's that Mike Seeger began to make reel-to-reel recordings of her songs.  She released several recordings and toured, enjoying some success during the folk revival of the 1960's.
